Lunar New Year Dessert Recipe!

recipes Feb 10, 2024

Tanguan are a classic dessert for Chinese New Year! They’re chewy sticky mini mochi balls and completely addictive! Eating tangyuan together cements family unity and prosperity. They’re traditionally eaten on the 15th day of lunar new year festivities but I love them so much I’ll start making this dish on the winter solstice and continue to indulge throughout all the celebrations. Check out the recipe below so you can make it for yourself, it’s super simple.

Gung Hay Fat Choy!
May you be happy and prosperous in the new year!

Here is my recipe for Tangyuan:

I cook to taste so feel free to adjust the quantity of the ingredients based on what you like!

Ingredients:

2 cups of glutinous rice flour

Warm Water as needed

1 teaspoon of ginger powder

Jujubes

Goji berries

Honey

Chrysanthemum or chamomile flowers

Instructions:

For the rice balls:
Bring a pot of water to a boil

Mix small amounts of warm water into the rice flour until a dough is formed

Make little balls

Drop them in the boiling water until they rise to the surface then scoop them out with a slotted spoon and put in a bowl

For the tea:

Bring a pot of water to a boil

Add all remaining ingredients and stir

Adjust balance of honey and ginger to taste depending on how strong you like your tea

Reduce to a simmer for ten minutes

Pour over rice balls and enjoy!
